Guidance for Providers Without Sufficient Vaccine to Meet Demand During National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) - November 21
While CDC anticipates an unprecedented number of influenza vaccine doses this season and understand from the manufacturers that the vast majority of doses will be distributed by the end of November, we recognize that many providers didn’t receive their vaccine as early in the vaccination season as they would have liked, making it difficult for them to vaccinate all of their patients during October and early November. In addition, some providers may still be awaiting completion of their vaccine orders as NIVW begins. This brief document is intended to provide guidance and suggestions for providers in that situation.

Weekly Report: Influenza Summary Update - November 27
During week 46 (November 12 – November 18, 2006), a low level of influenza activity was reported in the United States. Sixty-eight (3.2%) specimens tested by U.S. World Health Organization (WHO) and National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) collaborating laboratories were positive for influenza. The proportion of patient visits to sentinel providers for influenza-like illness (ILI) and the proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza were below baseline levels. Four states reported regional influenza activity; four states reported local influenza activity; 23 states, the District of Columbia, and New York City reported sporadic influenza activity; and 19 states reported no influenza activity.

Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) Journal

The Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) journal provides recognition of new and re-emerging infections and understanding of factors involved in disease emergence, prevention, and elimination. It also represents the scientific communications component of CDC's efforts against the threat of emerging infections. See the December 2006 issue of the EID journal at the following link: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/EID/index.htm
