Avian Influenza Update: Djibouti -
On May 12, 2006, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported the first confirmed human case of avian influenza A (H5N1) virus infection in Djibouti . The patient is a 2-year-old girl from a small rural village near the border with Somalia . She developed symptoms on April 23 and is presently in stable condition. Three of the child's siblings are also getting medical treatment and being evaluated for possible H5N1 infection. Health authorities in Djibouti began surveillance for human cases of avian influenza A (H5N1) after reports of a small number of chickens dying in early April. This is the first reported confirmed human infection with avian influenza A (H5N1) in Africa .

Seasonal Influenza

Flu Activity -
Influenza activity in the United States peaked in early March and continued at low levels during week 18 (April 30 – May 6, 2006)*. Ninety-three specimens (8.9%) tested by U.S. World Health Organization (WHO) and National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) collaborating laboratories were positive for influenza. The proportion of patient visits to sentinel providers for influenza-like illness (ILI) was below the national baseline. The proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza was below the threshold level. Five states reported local influenza activity; 38 states, the District of Columbia, New York City, and Puerto Rico reported sporadic influenza activity; and seven states reported no activity.
