Examine the psychology of a public health emergency and what messages the public will need from their health professionals

Barbara has been with CDC since 1991. Her communication expertise has been used in the planning or response to pandemic influenza, vaccine safety, emerging disease outbreaks, and bioterrorism. Internationally, she has acted as a crisis communication consultant on health issues for France, Hong Kong, Australia, Canada, former Soviet Union nations, NATO, and the World Health Organization. Barbara is the author of the 2002 book, Crisis and Emergency Risk Communication and CDC's Crisis and Emergency Risk Communication course, which is now taught in universities and other settings nationwide and internationally. In 2004, she launched a version of the Crisis and Emergency Risk Communication course for leaders.

Seasonal Influenza

Flu Activity - Updated April 28
During week 16 (April 16 – April 22, 2006), influenza activity continued to decrease in the United States. One hundred ninety-three specimens (11.0%) tested by U.S. World Health Organization (WHO) and National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) collaborating laboratories were positive for influenza. The proportion of patient visits to sentinel providers for influenza-like illness (ILI) was below the national baseline. The proportion of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza was below the baseline level. Six states reported regional influenza activity; 11 states and the District of Columbia reported local influenza activity; 31 states and New York City reported sporadic influenza activity; and two states reported no activity.

MMWR Notice to Readers - American Board of Disaster Medicine

Beginning in 2006, physicians can earn board certification in disaster medicine. The American Board of Physician Specialties (Atlanta, Georgia) has created the American Board of Disaster Medicine. This initiative is focused on various clinical specialties so that the collective board can provide a diverse knowledge base and advice to various organizations that engage in preparedness planning. The board will begin accepting applications from physicians on May 1, 2006, and plans to administer its first examination in the fall of 2006. Information regarding eligibility requirements for the American Board of Disaster Medicine is available at http://www.abpsga.org.
