Corps projects report 'business as usual' in Seattle District

Corps projects report 'business as usual' in Seattle DistrictSEATTLE—No damage to locks and dams in the region affecting operations have been reported by the Seattle District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Dam safety personnel have been dispatched to do further assessments. All facilities are reporting as operating "business as usual." Western Washington locks and dams include Mud Mountain Dam on the White River; Howard A. Hanson Dam on the Green River; and the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in the Ballard community of Seattle. At the Corps' Seattle District Headquarters, Federal Center South, employees were sent home after the earthquake. A structural assessment team began inspections to determine any appreciable damage. Initially, engineers observed only non-structural "cosmetic" damage -- ceiling tiles, toppled bookcases, fallen brick facade, and cracks in plaster. In addition some telephone problems were reported. At the Locks, employees reported only a broken water line into the administration building.
