Small lock closure extended through April 4 at Chittenden Locks in Ballard

Contact: Patricia Graesser (206) 764-3760 April 1, 2005 SEATTLE--The small lock at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard, which has been closed since March 1 for annual maintenance, will remain closed to boat traffic through April 4, according to the Seattle District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which operates the Locks. The large lock will remain open for boat traffic throughout this period. Boaters should be prepared to use the large lock with appropriate equipment and crew. The scheduled repairs to the small lock are part of an annual general maintenance program. While the small lock is drained for annual maintenance, the Locks staff will also change out the west end service gates pintle bearings, which are at the end of their life cycle. The crew also installed new miter bars on same gates. The crew is still working to repair an existing leak, and that will keep the small lock closed additional days. They are hopeful the small lock can reopen April 5.
