 Seattle deploys to aid disaster: Hurricane CharleySeattle deploys to aid disaster: Hurricane Charley FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Maria Or (206) 764-6896 August 16, 2004 SEATTLE - Local employees from the Seattle District, Army Corps of Engineers, are deploying immediately to support Hurricane Charley victims in Florida, where there are nearly a million people without power, thousands homeless and approximately 17 dead. Norma Gapasin and Susan Weber were the first two to deploy from Seattle District to Jacksonville District today to support the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Gapasin and Weber are both members of the Army Corps of Engineers, National Resource Management Planning and Response Team. Yesterday, the Corps was tasked by FEMA with logistics, ice, water, emergency power and temporary housing missions in addition to debris and temporary roofing. Corps' headquarters is seeking volunteers from districts nationwide. So far, Seattle District has submitted at least 10 names and continues to draw more volunteers to aid in this disaster. The Corps plays a major role in Natural Disaster Response and Recovery and maintains a high state of preparedness for national emergency operations.
