Local volunteers and Army Corps to plant American dune grass at Westport March 13

Local volunteers and Army Corps to plant American dune grass at Westport March 13Contact: Patricia Graesser (206) 764-3760 March 4, 2004 SEATTLE--Volunteers are invited to join work crews and the Army Corps of Engineers to plant native dune grass at Westport's south jetty Saturday, March 13, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Planting sprigs of native dune grass on the sand dunes near the Jetty will provide additional erosion protection and natural habitat. Any interested volunteers are asked to meet anytime after 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 13, at Westhaven State Park. Dress appropriately for the weather and bring your own lunch and shovel if you have one. Snacks and bottled water will be provided. For additional information about volunteering, please call Aimee Kinney at (206) 764-3634 or Matt Bennett (206) 764-3428. In February the Corps placed about 25,000 cubic yards of sand at the Grays Harbor south jetty breach fill. In 1993, winter storms gouged a 500-foot breach between the south jetty and the adjacent south beach shoreline. In 1994 the Corps filled the breach with 600,000 cubic yards of sand while engineers and scientists looked for the best long-term solution. The Corps is working in partnership with the Port of Grays Harbor, State of Washington and Westport to determine a long-term strategy to protect the navigation channel and south jetty.
