Small lock to reopen May 2 after extended closure at Chittenden Locks in Ballard

Small lock to reopen May 2 after extended closure at Chittenden Locks in BallardContact: Patricia Graesser (206) 764-3760 April 30, 2003 SEATTLE--The small lock at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard will reopen Friday after an extended closure. The small lock has been closed since Feb. 17 to replace the lock gates, according to the Seattle District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which operates the Locks. The scheduled work replaced the original guard gates, which were installed during the lock's construction in the early 1910s. The $2.5 million project included new gate construction by the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and preparation and installation work by S.L. Larson Construction Inc. of Lynnwood, Wash. Irish Foundry fabricated the castings associated with each set of gates.
