Free recreation activities on the Pend Oreille River this summerContact: 208-437-3133 May 3, 2002 NEWPORT, Wash.--The Army Corps of Engineers will feature special events during the summer of 2002 in our recreation areas along the Pend Oreille River and in the Visitor Center and Vista Area at Albeni Falls Dam. Campground programming is for campers, day users and local residents. The programs are on Friday and Saturday nights during the season. These programs will include David Thompson on the Pend Oreille; Lewis and Clark in Idaho; Sacagawea – a native of Idaho; the Ice Age – Discovering Lake Missoula; Exploring The Night Skies; Wolf People; Survivor; the Amazing Race, and others to be announced later in the season. There will be special children’s programs on Saturday afternoons, which will include Water Safety and Biking Safety. The Visitor Center summer hours are Tuesday through Sunday 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. We will be open on Monday, May 27 – Memorial Day. Exhibits provide hands-on enjoyment and there are movies for viewing. Outside tours of the project will be daily at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. during normal hours of operation Memorial Day through Labor Day. Please call 208-437-3133 to schedule inside tours for community groups and educational institutions. The Corps of Engineers’ campgrounds will be opening Saturday, May 11. Corps campgrounds include Priest River (better known as the “Mudhole”), Riley Creek, Albeni Cove and Springy Point. These campgrounds offer boat ramps, beaches, picnic shelters, and showers.
