The Lees and Independence, Montross, VA

Type of Event: Band

Event Details:
Theme: Lee family's participation in declaring independence from England and their participation in Revolutionary War. Audience size- as many as 2,000. Since the event will be mostly free, we are likely to get a large number of diverse people from the local area. Purpose for Armed Forces Participation: To help Stratford Hall celebrate Independence Day close to the day that Richard Henry Lee submitted a resolution to the Continental Congress declaring the colonies' independence from England. Those of us at Stratford Hall are trying to teach the public that freedom for the colonies came at a price, and did not come simply with the writing of the Declaration of Independence--there was much more to this story than many people know. The Lee family actually played a big role in the Revolution, too, whether it was as an officer in the army, in the Continental Congress, or as emissaries abroad. Having an armed forces band in attendance will help to bring attention to this history.
