2009 Harrier Demonstration Selection Board
The AV-8B Harrier II demonstration is one of the most sought-after aerial demonstrations offered by the U.S. military. The Marine Corps does not have a dedicated AV-8B II Harrier demonstration team, so demonstrations are performed by the same aircraft and crewmembers who train and deploy in support of real-world contingencies, including support of on-going operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. For this reason, Headquarters Marine Corps annually selects a handful of events to receive the coveted demonstration. To have your event considered on the board, please read and follow the submission instructions below. Coming Soon: Harrier demonstration-specific sponsor responsibilities
WASHINGTON (July 15, 2008) – Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps, will conduct its annual AV-8B Harrier II Demonstration Selection Board Nov. 4, 2008. The selection board will determine which events in calendar year 2009 will receive the coveted Harrier demonstration.
Those seeking a Harrier demonstration for 2009 must submit their completed requests via the Corps’ new website, www.marines.mil/community, no later than Oct. 21, 2008.
The exact number of aerial events to be selected for 2009 is undetermined, but operational and training requirements of the Corps’ Harrier squadrons have traditionally allowed for an average of 7 to 10 demonstrations annually. The Marine Corps receives more than 150 requests for Harrier demonstrations each year.
Results of the board will be published on this web page. Events selected to receive a Harrier demonstration in 2009 will receive official notification via mail, email, and telephone. Further, the official 2009 Harrier demonstration schedule will be sent to the International Council of Air Shows for publication on the ICAS website. Requestors are reminded that the Marine Corps does not have a designated AV-8B Harrier demonstration team. Pilots and crew members of the AV-8B Harrier aircraft are all fleet Marines who train and operate in the continental U.S. and conduct missions in support of the Long War.
The Department of Defense requires that all support provided by Marine Corps assets be incidental to the hosting event. Any changes to information regarding the request after submission must be communicated to the aviation liaison directly including changes to event dates, points of contact or telephone numbers. Failure to report any changes from the original request to the Marine Corps’ aviation liaison prior to the convening of the selection board will disqualify that event for consideration in 2009.
While the Marine Corps makes every effort to ensure selected sites receive designated aerial support, Marine Corps aviation units may cancel a scheduled appearance at any time due to unforeseen operational, training or safety requirements. 1. Instructions and Responsibilities - Prior to submitting a request for Marine Corps aerial support, organizations must first review all sponsor responsibilities and instructions listed on the Marine Corps’ website at: http://www.marines.mil/community/Pages/Aviation.aspx.
2. DD 2535 request form - To submit for a Harrier demonstration, requestors must mark the “Single Aircraft Demonstration” box on the on-line request form, and type in “Harrier demonstration” under Section I, Box 2 (Specific), and complete all other required fields on the form.
Note: Requests for static displays and regular flyovers for the same event must be submitted separately from single aircraft demonstration requests.
3. Sending FAA, FSDO sight approval - Requestors must also email a scanned copy of the Federal Aviation Agency/Flight Standards District Office sight-approval portion of the request form (DD Form 2536) via email to: hqmc.comrel@usmc.mil. This form should be in PDF format, and contain a valid signature and date from the local FAA/FSDO representative.
4. Changes of information - Further, it is the requestor’s responsibility to contact the aviation liaison at Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps, to confirm receipt of all submitted paperwork. The aviation liaison is Corporal Scarboro-Vinklarek at: 703-692-7434, or email: hqmc.comrel@usmc.mil.
