Thanks to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an immunization program to eradicate rubella in the United States has been successful.

No one in the Americas will ever again suffer from the paralyzing infectious disease of polio and a highly contagious viral disease responsible for killing and disabling millions of people worldwide - smallpox - has been totally eradicated.

Through research and education, the CDC, as part of the Department of Health and Human Services, plays a critical role in controlling infectious diseases, such as HIV and tuberculosis, and protecting the world by responding quickly to outbreaks of potential major disease epidemics such as SARS and pandemic influenza.

As the lead federal agency for protecting the health and safety of all people, the CDC is addressing global health concerns such as bioterrorism, anthrax and toxic chemical exposure, with staff in all 50 states and in 45 countries throughout the world.

Since its formation in 1946, the challenges have been great: To protect Americans from major public health threats. To be prepared for emerging diseases. And to partner with domestic and international public health organizations to cultivate effective disease prevention programs.
