Cigarettes: Leading Cause of Fire Deaths

Students from (name of school or coalition) will witness (name of fire fighters) extinguish a "smoking" 3-foot pack of cigarettes (made by the students) and distribute fire prevention booklets at (name of fire hall) at (location) on (date) at (time) in recognition of National Fire Burn Awareness Week, February 1–7, 2009.

According to the National Fire Data Center, 580 residential fire deaths were caused by cigarettes in 2005.

"The greatest tragedy is that these injuries are preventable," stated (name of spokesperson). Each year, Shriners Hospitals for Children, which sponsor the national week, ask parents and other caregivers to be aware of the dangers posed by cigarettes and many household appliances and take steps to keep their families safe.
