National Trails Day

National Trails Day is a nationwide event that draws people together to celebrate trails as they complete trail work projects. The improvements to our public lands accomplished through National Trails Day projects contribute to the long-term health and maintenance of these lands and trails.

On June 2, 2007 nearly 110 volunteers accomplished a number of trail maintenance, landscaping, and new construction projects on Campbell Tract. Volunteer crews planted native trees and native grass on the East wing of the airstrip, mulched trees and spread native grasses on the West wing of the airstrip, delivered and spread gravel on the Lynx Trail, planted native perennials in the Science Center gardens, painted railings on the mushing bridge and Campbell Airstrip Trailhead bridge, and picked up trash along the trails.

After a pizza lunch, volunteers enjoyed a bald eagle presentation followed by the release of a rehabilitated bald eagle. The event culminated with a public viewing of Alaska Fire Service smokejumper training operations on the airstrip.
