Arctic Field Office

Map of the portion of Alaska where the Arctic Field Office manages public lands.

The Arctic Field Office manages public lands north of the Brooks Range from its main office in Fairbanks and a new field station in Barrow. The vast area covered by the Arctic Field Office includes the 23-million-acre National Petroleum Reserve - Alaska, the largest block of federal land managed by a single agency. The petroleum reserve is home not only to significant oil and gas exploration efforts, but also Alaska Native villages, exciting archeological discoveries, and important habitat for migratory birds and caribou.

The field office's priorities are to help provide for the energy needs of the nation while protecting the environment and subsistence resources that are critically important to the people of the North Slope. We are currently engaged in several land use plans and environmental impact statements related to oil and gas leasing in the petroleum reserve.
