Do not confuse <relatedmaterial> with the element <separatedmaterial>, which provides information about materials that have been separated or physically removed from the described materials but that are related to them by provenance. Also do not confuse with <altformavail>, which encodes information about copies of the described materials, such as microforms, photocopies, and reproductions in digital formats.
EAD permits great flexibility in encoding information about <relatedmaterial>. Under one scenario, a repository may elect to note briefly the existence of such materials within a sentence in the Administrative Information <admininfo> element. Should the repository wish to list or describe the related items more fully elsewhere in the finding aid, it may insert a Reference <ref> link from the sentence in <admininfo> to an Adjunct Descriptive Data <add> element located at the end of the finding aid, where a <relatedmaterial> element is used to encode the longer description. Under another scenario, the repository may open <add> and <relatedmaterial> elements at the point where the description or reference first appears in the finding aid. The latter approach is appropriate when a <relatedmaterial> description is associated with only a single Component <c> rather than the <archdesc> in general. Regardless of where the <relatedmaterial> element appears, a repository may also elect to use an Archival Reference <archref> to link to an online finding aid or contain a formal citation to the related materials.
The <relatedmaterial> element is comparable to ISAD(G) data element 3.5.3.
