New York
In observance of World TB Day 2004, The New York City
Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYC DOHMH) Bureau of Tuberculosis
Control has planned several activities:
- The Bureau will be participating in two media events for World
TB Day. The first is an ethnic press roundtable on Friday, March
19 where TB will be one of several health topics discussed. The
second is a press conference on Monday, March 22 to highlight
the issue of growing rates of TB among the non-US-born. The Bureau
is working with the Charles P. Felton National TB Center and the
Center for Immigrant Health at New York University’s School
of Medicine to identify patients, community partners, and staff
to share their experiences with TB. The NYC Commissioner of Health,
Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, and the Director of the Bureau, Dr. Sonal
Munsiff, will be keynote speakers; ethnic media from communities
at high risk for TB have been invited to cover the event.
- The Bureau has planned many outreach activities to coincide
with World TB Day:
- Staff will be visiting private providers whose patients
are not on DOT in an attempt to “sell” them on
its benefits. The Bureau will also be targeting facilities
where few patients are enrolled in DOT. A breakfast will be
held for outreach staff on March 26 so they can share successful
strategies for reaching providers.
- Health educators will be arranging presentations at secondary
schools that report high TST positivity rates. The goal is
to raise awareness about TB among staff, strengthen relationships
between the Bureau and the schools, and reinforce the importance
of LTBI treatment in the schools.
- Bureau managers will be using World TB Day as an opportunity
to reach out to other DOHMH agencies with which they share
facilities in order to bolster inter-agency collaboration.
- The Bureau will also be mailing out to local CBOs tote bags
bearing our “Community Partnerships Initiative” logo,
along with our new brochures translated into Spanish, French,
Haitian Creole, Russian, Chinese, Hindi, Urdu, and Bengali.
