Arizona

The Arizona Department of Health Services and the Mexican state of Sonora's Secretaría de Salud will jointly sponsor a working meeting in Nogales, Sonora on March 24, 2006. The respective health officials will make a joint declaration respecting binational efforts between the states of Sonora and Arizona in the fight against tuberculosis.

The working meeting will analyze ways in which the two states can further work together to improve tuberculosis control along the border.

A press conference will be held to highlight the progress and challenges with tuberculosis in the two states.

Arkansas

The Tuberculosis (TB) Program at the Division of Health will work in partnership the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), the Baptist Health Medical Center (BHMC), and the Veteran's Administration Hospital (VA) to increase TB awareness in the Little Rock medical community and educate the public about TB. Booths with TB information and materials will be set up at UAMS, BHMC and VA. Information about TB on handouts, posters, and give away gifts with program information will be provided at each booth. Staff from the TB Central Office will be available at the booths to answer questions. The TB Program at the Division of Health will also provide TB educational materials to local health units throughout Arkansas for distribution to clients at local World TB Day events.

California

San Jose

Colorado

Dr. Marcos Espinal, Executive Secretary Stop TB Partnership, will speak about the Global Plan to Stop Tuberculosis that was released January 2006 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The plan calls for global TB spending to triple over the next decade to increase access to TB control programs and accelerate research on new tools to fight the disease. Dr. Bill Burman, Medical Director, Denver Public Health ID/AIDS Clinic, will speak on the role of clinicians and investigators in “new tools – diagnostics and drugs” in CDC-funded national and international research.

Florida

The SE Florida TB Coalition and the Broward County Health Department
In commemoration of World TB Day, the Southeast Florida Tuberculosis Coalition and the Broward County Health Department Staff Development and Training are pleased to present Lee Reichman, MD, MPH, noted author and internationally
renowned authority on the epidemiology of and advocacy for tuberculosis, as a guest speaker. Dr. Reichman will speak at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday March 16, 2006 in the Administrative Center Auditorium of the Broward County Health Department, 780 SW 24 Street, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. A continental breakfast, sponsored by the American Lung Association, Southeast Florida, will be served at 9 a.m. in the Administrative Center Cafe, second floor, where Dr. Reichman will be available to meet and greet. Bay County
The Bay County Health Department has been working diligently with local media to raise awareness about World TB Day. Tb Workers in the Panama City area will be featured on the local Morning Show on March 16th. In addition, information regarding World TB Day will be higjlighted on their Health Department’s electronic marquee during the week of March 20th – 24th.

Collier County
The Collier County Health Department will be hosting a free, educational seminar open to the public covering various topics related to TB on March 24th in two locations. The morning seminar will take place at the Collier County Health Department in Naples from 8:00 am to 10:30 am. The afternoon seminar will take place at the Collier County Health Department in Immokalee from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm. Can’t make it to either one of these sessions? No problem! Duval County
Duval County Health Department will be participating in two Employee Health Fairs on March 22nd and March 23rd at St. Luke’s Hospitals and the Mayo Clinic, respectively. Both fairs run from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm and will feature a TB display where educational information and promotional items will be available.
In addition, the CHD is working very diligently with the local media to highlight the importance of World TB Day in the state of Florida.

Holmes County
Holmes County Health Department will host a TB Education Workshop on March 31st (8 am – 3 pm) for health care professionals from the Greater Holmes area. The Workshop will be housed at the Holmes County Chamber of Commerce. Speakers are Mike Lauzardo, MD, and Toni Johns, RN. Educational credits available. Leon County
TB Workers in the Tallahassee area are working with local media to raise awareness about World TB Day and will be featured on the WCTV “In the Spotlight” Early Show with Claudine Kleafat on various mornings during the week leading up to World TB Day. Also, every Health Department in the Big Bend Area will have an informational and promotional corner dedicated to World TB
Day and TB facts in general.

Miami-Dade
The Dade County TB Control Office is hosting a World TB Day Brunch at the Rusty Pelican on March 24th, complete with a short TB Program. More details coming soon.

Orange County
The Orange County TB Control Office is hosting a World TB Day event in the CHD auditorium on March 24th for health department employees focusing on the devastating health and economic consequences tuberculosis has on global health.

Palm Beach County
The Palm Beach County Health Department is offering a Public Health Seminar on March 15, 2006 to commemorate World TB Day. The guest speaker, Dr. Jose de la Llana, a second year resident at the Preventive Medicine and Public Health Residency Program of the Florida Department of Health of Palm Beach, will
present on TB Trends of 2006 in the Special Needs Room at 901 Evernia Street, 1st Floor Auditorium from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm. For more information, contact Nancy Evans at (561) 355-3132.

Pinellas County
The Pinellas County Health Department will show the two-part video “Tuberculosis in America” to CHD staff and members of the public. The movie covers the early history of TB in America and is part of a PBS series from several years ago. The film will be featured on March 22nd at the St. Petersburg Health Center and the Clearwater Health Center. Educational, informational, and promotional items will be available to participants. Also, all Health Department staff in attendance will receive two hours training credit.

Seminole County
Seminole County Health Department will boast a lobby display in both of their County Health Department locations during the week of March 20th – 24th in commemoration of World TB Day. Stop by either of their locations to learn more about TB and this annual event.

Volusia County
The Volusia County Health Department is hosting an in-service training featuring Guest Speaker, Michael Lauzardo, Principal Investigator with the Southeastern National TB Center, on March 23rd from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. Dr. Lauzardo will speak about Global TB in commemoration of World TB Day. This training is

Bureau of TB & Refugee Health (Tallahassee)
The Bureau will kick off the day with Governor Jeb Bush’s World TB Day Proclamation, in addition to a press release issued by the Florida State Health Office. The Lobby of our Capital Circle Office Complex will also boast an elaborate display of World TB Day information and data. In addition, the DOH internet site will increase exposure for all citizens and media and also provide a
link to the CDC WTD site, and highlighted activities around the State.

"Kansas City Metro TB Fortnight" Course. Missouri and Kansas have combined efforts to help educate and raise awareness of the need to control and eliminate TB in the Kansas City area. In recognition of World TB Day 2006, this course will provide health care professionals with the knowledge and skills to effectively address the many complex issues that accompany TB. The morning sessions are designed to review the basics of tuberculosis including screenings, diagnosis and management. The afternoon sessions will build on the information provided in the morning by focusing on the clinical aspects of tuberculosis such as “missed opportunities” and management of multi-drug resistant TB.

Maryland

An all-day poster session will take place in the lobby of the State Health Department building. Also, a noon-time lecture by Dr. Gillian Van Blerk about the work with a TB complex she and her husband organized in Thailand. The public is invited. Dr. Van Blerk has served as a doctor for many TB patients in Maryland, but also has donated her time to Doctors Without Borders.

Baltimore, Maryland

In recognition of World TB Day, the Baltimore City Health Department’s TB Control Program is hosting an open house as a thank you to those committed to TB prevention at the Eastern Chest Clinic located at 620 N. Caroline Street. There will be informational and educational sessions on the activities of the program and TB infection and disease. RESULTS and the New Mexico Dept. of Health will host a World TB Day event for members of Congress and the media. The event will highlight important current issues pertaining to tuberculosis around the world, in our nation, and in our state. The recently released 2006-2015 Global Plan to Stop TB will be discussed. The Global Plan contains information on funding needs for implementing the plan. A recent study showing that it is more cost effective to tackle TB in its countries of origin rather than try to deal with it once it makes its way into the U.S., and the emerging issues around TB and multi-drug resistant TB along our border with Mexico will also be the primary topics for discussion.

Ohio

The Ohio Department of Health, TB Program will host the 2006 World TB Day Conference on March 24th at the Franklin County Board of Health Building in Columbus, Ohio. Several speakers will provide pertinent TB presentations covering a variety of topics. The topics include standard TB treatment regimens, TB as it relates to refugee health, and TB transmission dynamics linking genotyping and geographic distribution data using the Geographic Information System (GIS) to determine “hot zones” for the transmission of TB. Introductory and closing Presentations will also be made by members of the Ohio Department of Health TB Program and the Ohio TB Coalition.

Pennsylvania

Harrisburg
In recognition of World TB Day, the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Bureau of Communicable Diseases, TB/STD Division, will host an informational expo in the State Capitol Rotunda. The expo will kick-off with a press conference featuring experts in health promotion and disease prevention. In partnership with the American Lung Association and the Pennsylvania Thoracic Society, the Department of Health will distribute informational packets on tuberculosis. The event will also feature displays chronicling the progression of the disease and ways to prevent its spread.

The Texas Department of State Health Services will host a World TB Day Conference titled “Improving Tuberculosis Prevention and Treatment by Building Collaborations, Partnerships and Strategies.”

American Samoa

For 2006, the American Samoa TB Program will focus on the theme of “World Free of TB”. To support this, Dr. Ivan Tuliau (TB Clinician) and Faatuai Faoa (TB Program Nurse) will participate in 30-minute TV shows during which they will discuss the importance of TB evaluation and treatment for both latent TB infection and active TB disease. Two nursing in-services are scheduled for March 21 & 23, 2006. On Wednesday March 22, 2006 Microbiologist Seini Buikoto will make a presentation on TB laboratory methods to the medical staff. During the week, lectures will be provided to various youth, women’s, and men’s groups including the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) Nursing Program and the ASCC Health Science students. Additional educational meetings about TB screening for immigrants migrating to American Samoa for temporary work will be conducted with government agencies that deal with immigration, customs, commerce, and law.

Federated States of Micronesia,

Pohnpei State
Within the Federated States of Micronesia, the Pohnpei State TB program will coordinate several World TB Day activities. Key will be a mass media information campaign which will disseminate information about the disease. An accompanying hotline will be available to the general public to answer questions and provide detailed information. The hotline will also serve to evaluate the success of the radio programs based on the volume of calls received (the radio programs will refer listeners to the hotline). These services will be available starting one week before the 24th of March and will continue to be available through World TB Day. The mass media campaign would focus on radio messages broadcasted during prime time. The campaign will also include the distribution of informational printed matter with information about the hotline, including posters and fliers, in public places such as post offices, churches, and stores. The Pohnpei TB program also plans to acknowledge DOT workers for their meticulous work.

Yap
World TB Day in Yap will start on March 19, 2006. Beginning March 19, there will be roadside banners and TB posters put up for public awareness. Pamphlets will be disseminated at various stores. The TB staff from health services will participate in the following activities:

  • Visit one community where a greater number of cases reside
  • Use the hospital site for TB screening and TB101 presentations
  • Present and display TB videos and pamphlets

Guam

The Guam National TB Control Program will host several events in observance of World TB Day. First, the Governor of Guam will sign a World TB Day Proclamation at the Governor’s office in Adelup, Guam. Other events include educational programs at the Guam Department of Public Health on March 10, the Seventh Day Adventist Clinic on March 16, Guam Memorial Hospital on March 17, and the Guam Memorial Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility on March 23. Content of the programs will include the epidemiology of TB in Guam and the role of the Guam TB Program. Lastly, to increase the awareness of TB in the general community, a press release commemorating World TB Day will be distributed to several local newspapers.

Republic of Palau

To increase awareness of World TB Day, the Republic of Palau National TB Program will host several TB “Talks and Skits” throughout the week of March 20, 2006. These activities will take place in the following communities: Aimeliik State, Airai State, and in Ngerchemai and Meyuns, Koror State. Prior to kicking off World TB Day activities, TV and radio spots will be aired a week before these activities, with inclusion of an announcement for the World TB Day activities.
