Arizona

The Arizona Department of Health Services Office of Border Health, together with the Sonoran Health Department, and the Arizonan and Sonoran Delegation Offices of the US-Mexican Border Health Commission are sponsoring three Binational Tuberculosis Conferences at three sites along the Arizona-Mexico Border. Simultaneous translation will facilitate presentations by physician experts in tuberculosis from Mexico and Arizona. Topics will include Case Management of Patients with TB and HIV; Diagnostics of Tuberculosis; Tuberculosis Cases in the Border of Agua Prieta and Naco, Sonora Mexico; Epidemiology of TB in Arizona; and Surgical Issues Relating to Pulmonary TB.

California

News Conferences

Alameda County’s Medical Officer will present case counts by city to the Board of Supervisors during Public Health Week. Members of the press will be invited.

The San Francisco Department of Public Health will hold a news conference at the Tenderloin AIDS Resource Center (TARC). Feature presentations of the event will include adoption of QFT-gold testing and the new requirement of TB testing in the city's homeless shelters. TARC services HIV clients, many homeless among them, and their successes within this community will be featured along with their facilities and programs.

Tuberculosis Prevention Partnership of Santa Clara County will host a news conference at the Santa Clara County Medical Association offices. A brief awards ceremony will recognize 6 staff members as "Diligent Detectives" in the battle against TB. Public Health Director, Guadalupe Olivas will present the staff awards. Marty Fenstersheib, Health Officer, will present the most recent TB data for Santa Clara County and the State.

State and Local Jurisdiction Activities

California Department of Health Services
The Governor will issue a World TB Day proclamation.
The State will issue a statewide press release.

Los Angeles Department of Health Services, working with local the American Lung Association of California affiliate will issue a proclamation, and distribute information, education, pamphlets, and key chains at Oliveview, Harborview, and UCLA hospitals.

Riverside Department of Public Health Community Health Agency will issue a proclamation and include a lead article on TB in the quarterly newsletter for private providers. The week of March 14th, Riverside’s TB Controller hosted a breakfast for 15 front-line TB workers in recognition of their contributions to TB Control in the county.

Santa Barbara Public Health Department Disease Control and Prevention will issue a Board of Supervisors Proclamation and focus their efforts on educating private providers.

Stanislaus Public Health Services Agency will promote World TB Day using CDC-provided materials. In March, they will test all employees, and they will consider inviting news agencies to this event and/or photographing the event and including photos in information and education packets to local and state policy leaders.

Partner Activities

RESULTS coordinated a statewide media call on March 15th, resulting in four pre-World Stop TB Day news articles.

The American Lung Association of California will issue a statewide news release.

Materials to support local efforts, raise awareness, and highlight the work of the frontline TB worker can be found on www.ctca.org.

Colorado

The Colorado Coalition Against Tuberculosis will hold its quarterly meeting, featuring a discussion on TB in Colorado - 2005 World TB Day activities.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment distributed an article electronically addressing the significance of TB globally and locally. The distribution list includes local health agencies and nursing services, infection control practitioners, infectious disease doctors, and employees of the health department.

Media

  • Denver Public Health will submit a press release targeting the need for increased awareness of risks for pediatric TB cases.
  • Interviews were conducted with two mothers of pediatric cases in the Denver area. A Spanish language TV station will air the interviews around World TB Day.
  • A local newspaper in Weld County is interviewing a former TB patient.
  • A local TV station will interview a nurse in El Paso County.

Florida

The Southeast Florida TB Coalition will convene a symposium highlighting relevant and evolving epidemiological and public health issues in TB disease control. The symposium targets physicians, nurses and other health care professionals who provide services to the TB clients of Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Georgia

On March 24 the Georgia Tuberculosis Program in collaboration with our Controlling and Eliminating TB in African Americans Coalition (CETBA) is sponsoring a TB Education Forum at the West End Mall from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The Forum will include a live remote from a local radio station, speakers, and health education booths. These activities will highlight the kick off to our media campaign Hear Act Learn Treat TB or HALT Tuberculosis among African Americans in Fulton county.

In addition we will have TV interviews with UPN 69 Focus Atlanta (to air Sunday, March 20 at 12:00 P.M.), and WSB People to People. The City of Atlanta will make a Proclamation for World TB Day which will be presented to Department of Human Resources Commissioner B.J. Walker and the Georgia TB Program.
Similar activities will be going on through out the state in the various health districts.

Minnesota

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) plans for recognition of World TB Day 2005 include:

• A “World TB Day” message to all of the local public health departments in the state, the American Lung Association of Minnesota, members of the MDH TB Advisory Committee, MDH contacts in the immigrant and refugee communities, and provider networks most likely to address TB in their patient population. The message explains the significance of the day and encouraged individuals and communities to actively raise awareness about TB. Specific activities suggested are:

  • Letters to the editor or editorials in local newspapers
  • Press releases
  • Displaying posters or informational materials about TB
  • Writing an article for the local/community newspaper or appearing on a local radio show
  • Communicating with elected officials about public policy issues related to TB
  • Staff training about TB
  • Educational forums for members of affected communities in local areas
  • Increase local public health department staff knowledge of TB by visiting the CDC/DTBE, Stop TB, RESULTS, and MDH TB Program web sites

• A World TB Day display set up in the main lobby of 2 of the Health Department buildings that house the majority of MDH employees in the state. The display consists of TB posters, fact sheets and pamphlets, epidemiologic data, and an interactive “TB Quiz”.

• A special World TB Day page posted on the MDH web site. World TB Day listed on the MDH main page under “announcements” for the week of March 21st with a link to the World TB Day page. This page provides links to the CDC, WHO, Stop TB, and MDH TB Program web sites.

• World TB Day posted on the electronic MDH-wide calendar, and highlighted in the “Weekly Briefing”, an internal MDH e-mail communication sent to all MDH employees throughout the state. The weekly briefing also provides a link to the MDH World TB Day web page.

• An article highlighting World TB Day, including a summary of the current epidemiology of TB in Minnesota will appear in the March issue of “Bug Bytes,” a bi-monthly, electronically distributed update of current issues of interest to infection control professionals, laboratorians, local public health professionals, and health care providers statewide.

• TB will be the health topic addressed in March on Hmong Radio – a station widely listened to by Hmong persons living in MN. The program will feature a Hmong health care provider, provide an opportunity for questions and answers, and will deliver TB-related messages developed by MDH specific to the Hmong community.

• Ethiopian Radio will broadcast a World TB Day message on March 24th acknowledging the significance of the day, highlighting a few key messages for the Ethiopian community, and sharing TB resources available to community members.

• The Commissioner of Health will submit an op-ed piece to local newspapers in recognition of World TB Day addressing the significance of TB globally and locally.

• The Minnesota Chapter of RESULTS will submit editorial pieces about TB to local newspapers.

Teleconference

The Global Alliance for TB Drug Development would like to announce a New Drug Discovery Program in partnership with GlaxoSmithKline. Details of the 21 March, 2005 partnership announcement with GlaxoSmithKline will be presented during a teleconference hosted by the TB Alliance.

This teleconference will provide an overview on the launch of the drug discovery program to improve the treatment of TB. The program should significantly enhance the TB drug pipeline by adding several novel classes of compounds that use new mechanisms of action. A teleconference will be followed by a Question & Answer media session.

Tennessee

Nashville

The Metro Public Health Department of Nashville/Davidson County is sponsoring a statewide video conference to rural and metro health department staff featuring Dr. Lee Reichman. Dr. Reichman will present "Defusing the TB Timebomb" and will also discuss some of the challenging TB cases in Tennessee. Dr. Reichman will provide the same presentation to local medical provider at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, TN.

Lee B. Reichman, M. D., M.P.H., is the Founding Executive Director of the New Jersey Medical School National Tuberculosis Center, and Professor of Medicine, Preventive Medicine and Community Health at the New Jersey Medical School, in Newark, New Jersey.

Letters to Tennessee Civil Surgeons

Educational letters were sent to Tennessee Civil Surgeons to educate these practitioners about the burden of TB in the foreign-born population, as well as, the TB services available at all local health departments in Tennessee. The following materials were provided with each letter:

  • Letter stating TB must be reported within 12 hours, a map of Tennessee and regional TB clinic contact information.
  • List of TB services available at local health departments
  • Fact sheet: Diagnosis of latent TB infection and TB disease
  • Fact Sheet: BCG Vaccine
  • Data demonstrating Foreign-born Tuberculosis Cases in Tennessee, 1995-2004

APIC Article

The Tennessee Department of Health provided the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) with an article for their e-mail newsletter. The letter discusses Tennessee’s new 12 hour reporting requirement for active TB, as well as, the health department’s role in contact investigations.

Regional Press Releases

Regional Health Departments issued press releases to their local media outlets describing the steady decrease in overall TB cases in Tennessee and the increase of TB cases among foreign-born individuals in the state. Regional offices also provided a press release and radio spot to Hispanic media outlets to encourage this population to visit their local health department to receive a TB skin test.

Texas

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) will honor the 'Frontline TB Workers' of the state and the binational projects conducted by the state with a program featuring essays on the topics of "A Day in the Life of a Frontline Worker" and "What 'Frontline TB' Means to Me". Essays will be displayed as poster exhibits the week of March 21-25. Authors will read their essays at a Recognition Event.

The Department of State Health Services will also have a Brown Bag lunch for interested DSHS employees on the subject of "Everything You Ever Wanted to Learn about TB in 45 Minutes or Less"

Virginia

The Division of TB Control will host a TB Continuing Education Program using face-to-face and videoconference media. The program will be in two parts, with the first part occurring simultaneously in five health departments across the state. The content will be the regional epidemiology of TB and the presentation of the Traveling Spittoon Award to five health districts in the state; this program will be broadcast regionally via videoconference. The second part of the program will be broadcast statewide and will discuss the state epidemiology of TB, the winners of the Traveling Spittoon Award and a local/global discussion of tuberculosis.

U.S. Territories

American Samoa

The American Samoa National TB Program will coordinate several outreach events to help increase the awareness of TB in the country. First, the National TB Program Coordinator will collaborate with the Department of Health’s (DOH) Public Relations office to co – host a television spot called "Update on TB." The topics will include

  • What is TB Disease
  • How is it spread?
  • How can it be treated?

Simple explanations about the difference between TB infection and TB disease will be presented. Flipcharts of how TB spreads and a 5 minute video clip will be shown. A TB skin test demonstration will be done. This "Update" will be aired on 16 March.

Efforts to increase the importance of TB infection control will be focused on during the month of March. One effort will be the offering of TB screening and treatment if necessary to all DOH employees. A memorandum from the newly appointed Director of DOH will be distributed to all Department sections to encourage screening of at-risk employees. Incentives in the form of mugs and pens will be given to all participants.

Federated States of Micronesia

The Federated States of Micronesia Department of Education & Social Affairs (HESA) will sponsor a number of World TB Day events throughout the month of March. These events include: March 1-9, education/lectures will be given in 7 schools; March 10-18, TB tests will be provided in 7 schools; March 22-30, awards will be given to the winners of a TB awareness contest in 7 schools; radio spots about TB will air from March 21-26 on three stations. On Thursday, March 24th, a World TB Day Proclamation will be made by the Governor and broadcasted throughout the states. There will be radio interviews with TB staff on two stations.

Guam

The Guam National TB Control Program will host three events in observance of World TB Day.

First, the Governor of Guam will sign a World TB Day Proclamation. This event will take place on 23 March at 2:15 p.m. at the Governor’s office in Adelup, Guam.

The second event will include the distribution of pamphlets and posters to all public and private clinics. This activity will take place during the week of 21 March during regular clinic hours.

Lastly, staff from the Guam National TB Program will be interviewed on KUAM news which will be aired at the 6:00 p.m. newscast.

Republic of Marshall Islands

Ebeye

Beginning March 21st, health educators and the TB staff from the Ministry of Health will participate in a radio talk show. There will be roadside banners and posters for community awareness. The outreach team will go out to the high schools and conduct brief educational sessions on TB. A workshop will be conducted on March 24th. Attending the workshop will be traditional leaders, land owners and department heads. Last, but not least, there will be a ceremony and youth to youth will be providing skits and songs followed by a walkathon. A closing ceremony will follow the walkathon.

Press conference
The World Health Organization (WHO) TB Control Programme will conduct a press conference devoted to World TB Day. The objective of the press conference is to provide the media with detailed and most recent information about the problem of TB and the World TB Day activities. This year during the press conference, the WHO TB Control Programme plans to announce winners of journalists’ contest for excellence in reporting TB-related issues conducted in 2004 and winners of poster contests as of 2005. Journalists will be called to participate in the next contest planned for 2005.

Charity concert
The World Health Organization (WHO) TB Control Programme will host a charity concert. The event will feature a ceremony consisting of speeches, awarding the winners of poster contests and the journalists’ contest for excellence in reporting TB-related issues in 2004, and generating charity donations. In keeping with the WHO 2005 World TB Day theme, Frontline TB Care Providers, invitations and tickets to the charity concert will be distributed among staff of leading TB institutions, health care providers, former TB patients, and organizations implementing TB control programmes in the Russian Federation.

TB Poster Contest
The World Health Organization (WHO) TB Control Programme will conduct a contest for the best TB poster among (1) regular schools and (2) schools-sanatoriums. The objective of the contest is to attract attention of children and teenagers to the problem of TB. The World TB Day Organizing Committee will select the best posters in two categories and invite winners (first places) to the press conference mentioned above.

Web Conference

The World Health Organization (WHO) TB Control Programme will host a web conference aimed at on-line exchange of questions and information related to TB problem. Experts of the WHO TB Control Programme and national counterparts will be available to answer the questions educating the general public on the symptoms, early detection and treatment of TB, encouraging people to get tested at a TB service facility, and building greater societal commitment for the TB movement.
