This highly developed coastal area has been greatly affected by beach erosion in the recent past. Large condominiums and hotels have been built close to the beach in this area. As thousands of tourists enjoy the white sandy beaches each day, the health of the beaches is crucial to the local economy. Therefore, in response to rapid beach erosion, several areas within this region have undergone beach nourishment projects.

Treasure Island is separated from Sand Key, which lies to the north, by John's Pass. When this island was developed, bulkheads were a common feature along the beach, though most are now buried.

South of Blind Pass, Long Key is also highly developed, and contains many popular beaches such as Upham Beach, as well as the town of St. Pete Beach.
