Early Childhood Educators and Child Abuse Prevention: NAEYC's Perspective Research Findings, and Future Actions (PDF)
By Marilou Hyson, Maril Olson
2003

Summary: This report summarizes national research by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) to explore the thinking of 1,893 early childhood educators on the problem of child abuse and neglect. NAEYC believes that early childhood programs and educators help prevent child abuse and neglect every day when they build reciprocal relationships with families, help families handle stress, and communicate with families about difficult topics. Research participants consider their role in child abuse prevention, their preparation for taking a more active part in prevention, and how NAEYC, as the field’s professional association and accrediting body for high-quality early childhood programming, can help. Results reveal their strong feelings of professional and personal responsibility to help prevent child abuse and neglect, a willingness to be more active, and the recognition that helping families promote healthy social and emotional development is critical. Early childhood educators express needs for more training and resources to enable them to recognize situations placing children at risk of abuse and neglect, to handle challenging behaviors, and to partner more and communicate better with families in promoting healthy social and emotional development. Survey questions and answers are included. The report concludes with implications for the field and future actions, as NAEYC expands its efforts to support educators in meeting the challenges of this work.
