Georgetown Lake Hunting Policy

All hunting is closed from the last day of February to the beginning of dove season.

  • All hunting, except archery, is closed during the archery season for deer set by TPWD.  
  • Hunters, regardless of age, must possess a hunter safety card prior to hunting at Lake Georgetown.
  • Turkey, Raccoons, Bobcats, Foxes, and Coyotes may not be hunted or chased at any time.
  • Rifles, Pistols, and shotguns with slugs or shot larger than #2 common are prohibited at all times.

 

Deer:  Deer may be hunted with archery equipment only. Those persons wishing to hunt deer must complete and submit an application and nonrefundable $10 application fee for permit prior to July 4 annually. Applications will not be accepted electronically. Hunters will be required to mark their arrows with the name and address of the hunter or permit number in a permanent manner, possess a hunter safety card or International Bowhunters Education Program card and pass a proficiency test held prior to the hunting season. Deer may be hunted in the general hunting area as well as the deer hunting only area.  Deer may be hunted during the archery and general seasons set by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD).  Bag limits set by TPWD for Williamson County apply. All harvested deer must be taken to Tejas Park,  Russell Park or the Lake Georgetown Office for biological sampling. Failure to take deer to the check station will result in the revocation of all permits and charges being filed. Archery hunting for deer is not permitted without a drawn permit.
Deer hunting is permitted by lottery drawing only.

Feral Hogs:  Feral hogs may be hunted with archery equipment only. Persons wishing to hunt feral hogs must apply prior to July 4 in conjunction with the application process and requirements for deer hunting. Feral hogs may be hunted from the opening of dove season to the last day of February. Only archery deer hunters will be allowed to hunt feral hogs.

 
Dove:  Dove may only be hunted in the general hunting area. Dove season will correspond with the dates set by TPWD, EXCEPT during archery season for deer. During the Archery season for deer (as set by TPWD), all other hunting is closed. Bag limits are set by TPWD. Small game permit required.


Waterfowl:  Waterfowl may only be hunted in the general hunting area. Hunters may not possess lead shot or shot larger than #2 steel while hunting waterfowl. The season for hunting waterfowl will be set by TPWD.  Small game permit required.

   
Quail:  Quail hunting will be prohibited until further notice for scientific research and population analysis. For any questions, please contact the lake office.

 
Rabbit & Squirrel: Rabbits and squirrel may be hunted with shotgun only. Rabbit and squirrel may be hunted in the general hunting area at any time during dove season except during archery season for deer set by TPWD, but no later than the last day of February. Hunters are required to wear hunter orange while hunting rabbit and squirrel. Small game permit required.

     
  Blinds, Stands and Feeders: Natural hunting blinds made of loose materials, Ashe Juniper (cedar) 3" and under in base diameter and portable blinds that are removed after each hunting trip are authorized for hunting deer, feral hogs or waterfowl.  Hunting blinds or stands may not be nailed to trees. However, portable stands may be secured to trees with rope or wire if removed after each hunting trip. Feeders are authorized for deer and feral hog hunting. All blinds and feeders must be tagged with the owners name, address, phone number and date installed. Feeders may be set up one month prior to the archery season and must be removed prior to or on the last day of the deer season. All property failing to meet these requirements will be impounded. Hunters are encouraged to report all property failing to meet these requirements.


Target shooting: Target and skeet shooting are not allowed at any time.

 
Hunting Area Boundary : Hunters are responsible for knowing the hunting area boundaries.  Walnut Springs Camp and Sawyer Camp begin at the eastern boundary of the general hunting area, with no hunting allowed within 600 feet of either these camps or Cedar Hollow and Tejas Camp. Hunting is also prohibited on The Good Water Hiking Trail. HUNTING IS PROHIBITED IN ALL OTHER AREAS including areas within 600 feet of adjoining land with occupied dwellings, developed parks, or any place where No Hunting signs are posted unless otherwise stated. All hunting except archery for deer is prohibited in DEER HUNTING ONLY areas.

   
Permits & Hunting Fees : Permits may be obtained at the Lake Georgetown Project Office only ( usually available by late May ). Permits will be issued on a first come, first serve basis for rabbit, squirrel, dove and waterfowl. Hunting for rabbit, squirrel, dove and waterfowl are with shotgun only. Archery permits are required for deer and feral hog hunting only. For archery, a nonrefundable $10 application fee must accompany an application for it to be considered. The fee will be applied to the permit fee for successful applicants. To be eligible for an archery permit, hunters should fill out an application available at the Lake Georgetown Project Office. Applications and application fees must be received by July 4. Applications will not be accepted electronically.

Fees will be as followed:


Small game (dove, waterfowl, rabbit and squirrel) - $50

Deer/hog (archery only) - $100
