On October 17, 2006 President George W. Bush signed into law the Northern California Coastal Wild Heritage Act. Part of the act designated Cow Mountain as a congressionally designated Recreation Area. The Act specifies that motorized, off-highway vehicle recreation be a prescribed use in the South Cow Mountain OHV Area, and that the North Cow Mountain area be managed primarily for other, non-motorized recreation. The current recreation plans for these two areas are now outdated, and need to be updated to be consistent with the Act.

 

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management hosted a series of public meetings to receive input on recreational use issues that should be addressed in the new Recreation Area Management Plan for the Cow Mountain Recreation Area, located near Ukiah, CA. The meetings were held at the following locations:

 

February 26: Healdsburg City Library Conference Room, 139 Piper Street, Healdsburg

 

 

 

 

Participants at the meetings were given an opportunity to provide written respon. For those who could not attend a public meeting BLM accepted e-mail and fax comments until March 31.

 

The BLM is now collecting information from other agencies and stakeholders to develop a draft Recreation Area Management Plan with alternative actions.
