Cold Regions Lab Retiree Receives American Polar Society Award

Tony Gow photo27 Apr 04--HANOVER, N.H.--Dr. Anthony J. "Tony" Gow, a retired research geologist, formerly with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center's Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) in Hanover, N.H., has been elected an honorary member of the American Polar Society, an award in recognition of his contribution to polar science and exploration.

Gow was selected to receive this award for his, "extraordinary breadth of experience and research in both polar regions," states the letter of invitation from APS.

"Tony is in good company...he joins the best of the best as one of the 'giants' of American science/exploration in the polar regions. And I know that Tony has as much or more time at both ends of the world than perhaps any other past honorary member," states Dr. Lawson Brigham, Chairman, APS's Honors Committee.

The American Polar Society was founded in 1934 with the primary purpose to band together all persons interested in polar exploration. Only 36 people have received the APS award in 80 years.

In 1994, Gow was bestowed the International Glaciological Society's prestigious Seligman Crystal Award for outstanding contributions to the field of glaciology and in 2001 he was awarded the Goldthwait Polar Medal by the Byrd Polar Science Center at The Ohio State University.

Gow resides in Lebanon, N.H.

CRREL is one of seven laboratories that make up the ERDC. The ERDC is the premier research and development facility for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with more than 2,000 employees, $1.2 billion in facilities, and an annual research program exceeding $700 million. It conducts research in both military and civil works mission areas for the Department of Defense and the nation. CRREL is the only Department of Defense laboratory addressing problems and opportunities unique to the world's cold regions. Located in Hanover, N.H., CRREL also has field offices in Fairbanks and Anchorage, Alaska.
