Security Technology Information Archive (STIA)

HSS has established an information resource at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) that archives data about security technologies, and makes that data available to users at DOE and NNSA sites. The archive is currently staffed by an individual that serves several functions including data acquisition, database management, information advisor, and librarian. Although HSS plans to eventually establish an ability to electronically search and download reports and data, the feedback received from prospective field users suggested that it is important to first have a person capable of helping them find information via phone. The STIA provides a central reference library of critical information about security technologies including performance evaluation results such as probability of detection, delay values, and probability of hit and kill data that can be used to prepare vulnerability analyses and simulations. It will also include vendor specifications, safety-related data and lessons learned by sites that may have already installed the technology. The STIA collects, updates as necessary, and distributes this information to identified users.

The STIA serves a host of different users within DOE and NNSA, and potentially other agencies that have an appropriate need-to-know. Specific audiences targeted are site security operations staff, protective forces, vulnerability analysts, and others.

The STIA maintains a physical library of reports with hardcopies, but also strives to establish electronic files where possible so that they can be disseminated quickly upon request. In the case of classified information, however, all information will initially be handled in hardcopy form and mailed to requestors. HSS expects much of the information that the STIA will house to originate within DOE, but we also plan to establish formal links and obtain routine distributions of reports from other agencies that deal with security technology, and in particular the Department of Defense. Where it makes sense, information will be distributed among partners with ORNL. For example, many sites and other laboratories already have archives of reports and data on security technologies. Rather than duplicate existing archives the STIA will attempt to establish a searchable listing of abstracts of reports that can be dispatched directly to requestors when needed.
