Restoring Native Habitats Through The "War on Weeds" In June of 1999 a new group of soldiers became active on Fort Ord that call themselves the "weed warriors." The weed warrior program which is the product of a pilot project partnership between the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Student Conservation Association (SCA) was formed on the belief that the invasive weed problem is a "war" that can only be fought with the help of an informed and active public. For the last two years BLM/SCA weed warriors have been in charge of creating a program to enlist community "weed warriors" through education and outreach. To learn more about the program and to inquire about obtaining "Weed Warrior" resources call Bruce Delgado at 394-8314 or email: bdelgado@ca.blm.gov. BLM - SCA Intern Opportunity The BLM Fort Ord office has selected Kate Martin for a 12 month SCA intern opportunity. Kate´s responsibilities will include environmental educational outreach about invasive weeds, prescribed fire, and native plant restoration. Kate will have the opportunity to share her knowledge, receive training, and work with a great crew, while taking care of your beautiful public lands! For more information contact Kate or Bruce at the numbers listed above. |
