Activities Underway

Office of Safeguards and Security Evaluations (OA-10)

Protective Force Management and Capabilities Special Review: Onsite data collection activities at Pantex were completed this week. Onsite validation and closeout activities are scheduled. The purpose of this special review is to evaluate the effectiveness of the Department's overall protective force performance. Reviews have been conducted at Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos National Laboratories (LLNL and LANL, respectively). Recent IG reports have raised concerns about protective force preparedness and training at DOE / NNSA facilities.

Nuclear Materials Accountability e-Government Initiative: Attended a steering committee meeting this week to discuss process in enhancing DOE's ability to account for special nuclear materials (SNM). Next steps include the completion of a gap analysis and the design of possible database solutions. Implementation of solutions is not expected until mid-2005.

National Training Center (NTC) Curriculum Special Study: An onsite visit to the NTC is scheduled in support of this study. OA-10 will support the upcoming NTC review of its curriculum by serving as team members with technical experts from field sites and SO to review major elements of the NTC safeguards and security training program.

Nevada Test Site (NTS) Comprehensive Inspection: Planning continues for this inspection with the identification of topic team resources and scooping of administrative and logistical needs. A pre-inspection visit (team management and force on force coordination) has been scheduled.

S&S Directives Streamlining Initiative: A review was initiated this week of the directives that have been developed as part of this streamlining initiative. Comments are due to SO in early June.

Office of Cyber Security Evaluations (OA-20)

Pantex Plant Classified Cyber Security Inspection: Onsite closeout activities are scheduled.

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) Unclassified Cyber Security Inspection: Onsite data collection activities are scheduled. External penetration testing was initiated last week in support of this inspection.

Nevada Test Site (NTS) Unannounced Cyber Security Penetration Testing: The final draft report is being prepared for management review. The unannounced testing involved network penetration testing from the Internet, evaluation of computer modems in auto answer mode, detection of wireless networking devices, and an internal assessment to evaluate protections against a malicious insider.

Office of Emergency Management Oversight (OA-30)

Savannah River Site (SRS) Emergency Management and Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) Inspection: The interim corrective action plan (CAP) was reviewed for adequacy this week.

Hanford Emergency Management Targeted Review: Onsite validation and closeout activities are scheduled. The emergency management inspection focused on performance testing and DOE line management readiness assurance programs. Tabletop performance testing was conducted as part of the review.

Office of Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) Evaluations (OA-40)

Los Alamos National Laboratory ES&H Inspection: The scoping visit for the inspection is scheduled. A meeting with representatives from the LANL Audit and Assessment Office was conducted this week (May 13), in Washington, D.C., at the Forrestal Bldg., to discuss the scoping visit activities.

Kansas City Plant (KCP) ES&H Inspection: Onsite validation and closeout activities are scheduled.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) ES&H Inspection: Planning continued this week in support of this inspection. Activities have been coordinated with the Office of Science (SC) and the EH Office of Enforcement. Onsite data collection activities are scheduled.

Ambulatory Accreditation Program: The accreditation survey of LLNL is scheduled for May 24-25.

Worker Safety Regulation: Continued to support the efforts of the 851 Executive Team.

Safety Management Challenge Task Force: Support continued to the Department to address Safety Management Challenges through the efforts of the Safety Management Challenge Task Force.

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) Emergency Management Targeted Review: The final report was distributed May 6. The interim corrective action plan is due around June 7.

Continuity of Operations (COOP) Exercise: Provided support to the COOP exercise conducted this week.
