Activities Underway

Office of Safeguards and Security Evaluations (OA-10)

Y-12 National Security Complex Safeguards and Security Inspection: A comprehensive safeguards and security inspection is now scheduled to be conducted at Y-12 in place of the INEEL inspection previously scheduled. This change is in response to a request by NNSA. Departmental and media interest is high.

Protective Force (PF) Management and Capabilities Special Review: Planning continued for the force-on-force performance testing at LLNL. Coordination continued with SO and NNSA to resolve safety issues identified with the use of smoke grenades. The LANL and Pantex announcement memoranda were forwarded to management for review. Coordination for the Pantex review continued. The purpose of this special review is to evaluate the effectiveness of the Department's overall protective force performance.

Classified Matter Protection and Control (CMPC) Special Review: Preparations continued in support of the data collection activities scheduled to be conducted at LLNL. Data collection activities are also scheduled at several other sites throughout the year in support of this special review.

Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIF) Special Review: CMPC subject matter experts are preparing to support OA-20 led reviews at LANL and Pantex. Relevant documents stored at IN Headquarters were reviewed on this week in support of this effort.

Office of Cyber Security Evaluations (OA-20)

Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIF) Baseline Review: Preparations continued for the SCIF reviews scheduled to be conducted at Pantex and LANL. Reviews have been completed at Y-12, DOE Headquarters, and LLNL. Reviews of other DOE SCIF are planned for the coming months. The full baseline review is scheduled to be completed in May 2004. This activity is being conducted at the request of IN and pursuant to the Federal Information Management Security Act requirements for independent evaluations of information systems' security.

Pantex Plant (Pantex) Classified Cyber Security Inspection: Preparations continued in support of the inspection of the Pantex classified cyber security program. Planning for network testing activities and reviewing site policies, procedures and security plans is ongoing.

Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) Unclassified Cyber Security Inspection: Initiated planning for an inspection of the Jefferson Lab unclassified cyber security program. A conference call was conducted this week with site personnel to discuss expectations for the inspection and to learn about the facility's cyber assets.

Office of Emergency Management Oversight (OA-30)

Savannah River Site (SRS) ES&H and Emergency Management (EM) Inspection: A draft of the inspection report was provided to the site for comment last week. Comments are due back on March 8. The inspection included tabletop performance testing.

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) Emergency Management Targeted Review: Preparations with BNL trusted agents continued in support of scheduled tabletop performance tests.

Hanford Site Emergency Management Targeted Review: Planning activities continued with the Richland Operations Office in preparation for this review. Inspection activities are being coordinated with OA-50 who will conduct an inspection of the River Protection Project (RPP) during the same period.

Office of Environment, Safety, and Health Evaluations (OA-50)

Savannah River Site (SRS) ES&H and Emergency Management (EM) Inspection: Onsite validation and closeout activities were conducted this week. A draft of the inspection report was provided to the site for comment. Comments are due on March 5.

Kansas City Plant (KCP) ES&H Inspection: Onsite scoping/planning activities were conducted this week.

Ambulatory Health Care Accreditation: The re-accreditation survey at INEEL was conducted this week. The survey of LLNL is tentatively scheduled for March but remains pending due to availability of AAAHC surveyors. Notification of the re-accreditation status of Y-12 is expected at the end of February.

River Protection Project (RPP) ES&H Inspection: Onsite planning activities were conducted this week to accelerate the preparation for the upcoming review. The scope and schedule are being revised based on allegations raised by a Government Accountability Project (GAP) review.
