Saylorville Lake Visitor Center Opens

 

Got a touch of cabin fever? Stop by the Saylorville Lake Visitor Center to view wildlife displays, watch birds at the feeders, or learn the hotspots for wildlife viewing.

 

The Saylorville Lake Visitor Center will open for the season on Saturday, January 10 th , 2009. The center is open on Saturdays and Sundays from noon - 4 pm in January, February, and March. The center may close due to inclement weather. To check the status, call 515-276-0433.

 

The Saylorville Lake Visitor Center is located on the east end of the dam, off Highway 415 on Horseshoe Road . Visitors cannot access the Visitor Center from the west end of Saylorville Dam ( Beaver Drive ).


Saylorville Lake Shelter Reservations Begin January 5, 2009

 

Already planning a family reunion or company picnic for 2009? The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Saylorville Lake will begin accepting shelter reservations on January 5, 2009. Reservation requests will be accepted on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. To reserve a picnic shelter call (515) 270-6173 or visit our Shelter Reservation Office located on the west end of the Saylorville Dam in the Corps of Engineers Administration Building.

 

Shelters may be reserved for dates from mid-April through mid-October. A non-refundable $50.00 fee is charged for each shelter reserved. The charge for the Sandpiper Shelter area, which can accommodate up to 500 people, is $110.00. Cash, check, money order, MasterCard, Visa, Discover, Diners Club and American Express credit cards are accepted for payment.


No Sledding at Saylorville

Due to damage left by this summer's floods, the sledding hill in Cherry Glen Recreation Area at Saylorville Lake has been closed. Visitors are reminded that sledding is also restricted on dams. These areas can be dangerous due to obstructions which may be hidden by the snow. Depending on ground conditions, Cherry Glen hill may re-open. For the most up-to-date status, please tune to 1610AM Radio, call 515-276-0433 for the lake recording.


Firewood Cutting at Saylorville Lake

The 2008 firewood cutting program at Saylorville Lake will begin on Monday, October 6 th . Permits must be obtained in person at the Administration Office, located at the west end of Saylorville Dam between 8:00 AM and 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday.

 

Firewood permits will be $10.00 for mixed hardwoods and will be issued from October 6 th through November 21 st 2008. Permits are good for two pickup truck loads of wood. The wood is to be used for personal use only and cannot be re-sold. Please note: these are standing trees that have to be cut and split on your own. Split firewood is not available. Cutting will be permitted in designated areas from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily, starting on Wednesday, October 15 th .
