Designing Environments for Young Children: Leading Issues (PDF)
By Linda Cain Ruth
2002
Summary: This article discusses the design and construction of outdoor environments and facilities for young children. A review of the literature indicates that the major issues can be divided into three categories: physical size and scale, physical and developmental needs, and psychological needs. The designer is encouraged to consider the psychological state of the child that will be using the space and to consider the child’s emotional needs in the design of the space as well as its aesthetic appeal. It is important to provide children with sensitively designed spaces that will allow them a degree of understanding and sense of control over their surroundings.
