Since 1980, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, under the Army's direction, has served as DoD's agent in this program, providing assistance to DoD and its military components by entering into agreements with states for oversight of military environmental restoration activities nationwide. As of January 2007, 51 agreements were in place with states, territories and the District of Columbia. The partnerships framed through these agreements have aided in expediting many military cleanups while fostering communication and cooperation with environmental regulators and the public.
