Biological
and Environmental Research (BER)
For over 50 years, the BER has continued to advance world-class biological and environmental research programs and scientific user facilities to support DOE’s energy, environment, and basic research missions. BER provides the foundational science underpinning the development of cellulosic biofuels as a major secure national energy resource; understand relationships between climate change and Earth’s ecosystems, and assessing options for carbon sequestration; predicting the fate and transport of contaminants in subsurface environments; and development of new tools to explore the interface of biological and physical sciences. BER science is vital to the nation’s energy security and environmental future.
