UNPRECEDENTED INTERPRETATIONS

PLEASE NOTE: These interpretations were written based on information and source materials--OSHA regulations, DOE Standards and Directives, national consensus standards, etc.--that were current at the time they were composed. All responses are official record copy and have not been updated or altered to reflect newer or current regulations.

What are DOE unprecedented interpretations?

DOE unprecedented interpretations are interpretations of occupational safety and health standards that set DOE policy. DOE interpretations are applicable to DOE and its contractors, but have no contractual or enforcement status outside of DOE. Each unprecedented interpretation was prepared in response to an inquiry made to the DOE Worker Safety and Health Standards Response Line. Inquiries are deemed to be unprecedented if there are no previous interpretations or written information, such as a consensus standard, DOE Order, OSHA compliance directive or other source that answers the inquiry.

Unprecedented Interpretations are online from July 1, 1993 to present.

An explanation of the interpretations numbering follows:

D - this denotes a DOE interpretation

XX-XX-XXX - this represents the date (year and month) and sequential number within that month and year that the inquiry was received by the Response Line.
