Kazakhstan is a recently independent country with an ancient
culture. Until 1991 it was a part of the USSR, previous to that,
beginning in about 1850 it was a part of the Russian Empire.
From the late Middle Ages, until becoming part of the Russian
Empire, the Kazakhs were an important people associated with
the states of Central Asia and China. The attached websites give
access to many aspects of Kazakh culture and history.
