Types of Teams

There are a variety of team types, each of which can vary over several dimensions, such as function, purpose, time duration, and leadership. The choice of team type depends on the nature of the organization, the task to be performed, and work force expertise. Team type dimensions are:

  • Functionality
    • Functional teams - Team members are from the same work unit.
    • Cross-functional teams - Team members come together from different and varied work areas to resolve mutual problems.
  • Purpose
    • Problem-solving teams - Team members are focused on specific issues to develop and implement solutions.
    • Developmental teams - Team members concentrate on developing new products or systems.
  • Duration
    • Time limited - The team is created for a specific purpose and is dissolved when the task has been completed.
    • Permanent - "Standing" team is a permanent part of the work unit or the organization.
