Going strong

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

Lots of people have TV exercise shows. But there’s only one Jack LaLanne. LaLanne is a pioneer. His first national show was in 1959.

He’s also pitched lots of products, and done some amazing stunts, like swimming San Francisco Bay from near Alcatraz to Fisherman’s Wharf handcuffed and towing boats.

LaLanne, still fit, was in Washington for a Lifetime Achievement Award from the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. He was 92, but who’s counting?

LaLanne had some advice for the youngsters who, at his age, are just about everybody – eat right and be active:

``You know who the most important person on this earth is? You! Everything depends on you! You being the most important person on this earth, what do you do for that most important person on the earth?” (11 seconds)
