Need an antibiotic?

From the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, I’m Ira Dreyfuss with HHS HealthBeat.

In the race between medical science and bacteria, the bacteria are catching up.  Some bacteria evolve so they can hold off antibiotics, and they then spread.

Researchers are developing stronger antibiotics. But experts say an excellent way to preserve the usefulness of the ones we have is to use them only when necessary

At HHS’ Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Director Carolyn Clancy says patients can make the best use of antibiotics by working with their doctor:

``Don’t beg for antibiotics if he or she says that you don’t need them. If you do need antibiotics, be sure to take all of the prescription.’’ (8 seconds)

That’s to kill all the bacteria, leaving no survivors to evolve into resistant strains.
