Fonts are an implementation issue. They have nothing to do with record interchange, which is what MARC 21 is about. The problematic characters are the "half marks" (U+FE20 through U+FE23) The "half marks" are primarily used in romanizing languages written in Cyrillic script. Using the original script will solve the problem for transcribed text (as Frances McNamara pointed out), though not Latin script access points. Arial Unicode MS doesn't iinclude glyphs for the "half mark" characters, but some fonts, for example, Code 2000 do. So maybe those who are concerned about display issues need to investigate use of a font other than Arial Unicode MS. This is purely related to *your* system, so should be taken up on a users' group list (or perhaps on the AVIAC list or the MARC IG as Jim Agenbroad suggested). -- Joan Aliprand
