Subject: Topic 1.5, Should we Exclude Unicode's Unmappable Diacritics?
Comments: To: [log in to unmask]
Content-Type: multipart/alternative;

Monday, October 10, 2005 In MARC-8 ANSEL has 28 diacritics. At 0300-036F Unicode has 106 Combining Diacritical Marks. Thus Unicode has 78 more diacritics than MARC-8. If we decide to use NCR's I suggest that we exclude these 78 Unicode. Otherwise we would have to decide whether the NCR for the unmappable diacritic should precede the letter (probably ASCII) it modifies as with MARC-8 or follow as UTF-8 codes for diacritics do for which the NCR is a surrogate. I can't imagine that these 78 unmappable diacritics would often be needed for cataloging but I can imagine that if allowed they would occasionally get into UTF-8 MARC records and these records would be requested by MARC-8 systems. I have called this Topic 1.5 since it depends on our decision about conversion of unmappable characters--use NCR's or not? and on Unicode characters to exclude.
