The Bottom Line: Setting the Real Standard for Bay Area Working Families (PDF)
By United Way of the Bay Area , Ed.
2004
Summary: This report profiles nine counties in the San Francisco Bay Area to show the monthly expenses for families of various sizes and the number of families who are not earning enough to cover these expenses. It is suggested that the Self-Sufficiency Standard is a better measure of the cost of living than the Federal Poverty Level. The report describes how some local nonprofits are using the Self-Sufficiency Standard to help increase economic self-sufficiency and improve the lives of low-wage workers. Policy recommendations to support low-wage workers and increase self-sufficiency are listed (e.g., promote policies that support increased wages, career ladders, industry sector initiatives, higher education, and high wage job training for low-income adults).
