Abstract: Mason V. Hargett contributed greatly to the field of tropical medicine with his work on the yellow fever vaccine, first with the Rockefeller Foundation in Brazil and then at the USPHS Rocky Mountain Laboratory in Montana. Hargett's research facilitated the introduction of a yellow fever vaccine produced without human serum.

Abstract: Albert Baird Hastings was with the U. S. Public Health Service, 1917-21; the Rockefeller Institute, 1921-26; the University of Chicago, 1926-35; and, was Head of the Department of Biochemistry, Harvard University, 1935-59. From 1959-66 he was with the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation. Collection has extensive general correspondence from individuals as well as relating to conferences and organizations. Includes a large number of photographs. Contains reports, memoranda, and other data, pertaining to the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation.

Abstract: Michael Heidelberger (1888-1991) is known as one of the founders of quantitative immunochemistry, and in the course of his career studied, among others, bacterial polysaccharides (particularly pneumococcal), as well as the immunochemistry of proteins, antibodies, and antigens. The papers deal primarily with Heidelberger's career as a teacher, researcher, and active member of the scientific community.

Abstract: Werner Henle, the son of a surgeon and grandson of anatomist-histologist Jacob Henle, was born in Dortmund, Germany. He attended the University of Munich from 1929-1930 and transferred to the University of Heidelberg in 1930 where he finished the course work needed for medical degree in 1934. Gertrude Szpingier was born in Mannheim, Germany and received her medical degree from the University of Heidelberg in 1936. The Henles are the most well known, however, for their research on Epstein-Barr virus. Their discovery of the relationship between Epstein-Barr virus and cancer demonstrated that the presence of certain viruses in the nucleus of a cell could transform a healthy cell into a malignant one.

The collection contains correspondence, diaries, reprints, printed matter, diplomas and certificates.
