Hunting
Felsenthal and Grand Marais Recreation areas are nestled on the banks of the
Ouachita River and is the headquarters for sportsmen who enjoy outdoor recreation
such as hunting and fishing in rivers, lakes and bayous. Along this section
of the Ouachita River you will find a fisherman's paradise, offering an abundant
supply of bass, crappie, bream and catfish. This region is a part of
one of the larger contiguous bottomland hardwood forests in the United States
and also boasts the world's largest green tree reservoir which each winter
attracts large numbers of waterfowl and waterfowl hunters. Ducks begin
arriving in September with blue-wing teal, mallards, black ducks, gadwall,
and ring-neck ducks among the 20 species that winter here. Wood ducks are a
year-round resident of the region.
There are numerous opportunities for
excellent whitetail deer, turkey and small game hunting nearby since these
recreation areas share a border with 3 different public wildlife management
areas.
Finch Bayou Recreation Area is surrounded by Wildlife Management Areas. Hunting
in the WMA is allowed with a permit one may acquire through Wildlife and Fisheries. Many
enjoy primitive camping in the recreation area during hunting seasons
