Summary: This issue brief by Early Childhood Iowa- Quality Services and Programs Component Group discusses the importance of access to dental care for young children. Obstacles to establishing a dental home in Iowa are outlined. Iowa needs to develop an integrated and coordinated oral health service delivery system in order to help families obtain dental homes. This system should include: (1) oral health promotions; (2) education; (3) prevention; (4) hospital primary care dental integration; (5) multiple providers to screen, prevent disease, and make referrals to dentists; and (6) maximized efficiency of the available workforce.
