Pit River Recreation Area

Pit River Campground

The Pit River is the largest river in northeastern California. It drains this part of the state before entering the Sacramento River at Shasta Lake. The north fork of the Pit starts at Goose Lake, while the south fork begins high in the Warner Mountains The two converge near Alturas, California. The river flows through large mountain valleys and cuts its way through massive basalt flows to form incredible canyons. These canyons exhibit unusual geological formations that promote a variety of wildlife species unique to these landscapes.

The Pit River Campground is located on the river near Fall River Mills, California. This isolated area is one of the most unique and aesthetic camping spots around. The campground offers sites with tables, fire rings under large pine, oak, and ash trees. Fishing is available in the river as well as in several large reservoirs and lakes nearby. A variety of habitats surround the campground, including riparian areas, pine/oak woodlands, and upland brush land. The wildlife varies with the landscape, resulting in great bird watching opportunities. Hiking, sight-seeing, and mountain biking are some of the other recreational opportunities available in the vicinity.

Directions:  From Redding, California, take Highway 299 East toward Burney, California.  After Burney, you would go 12 miles east until you see the sign "Pit Power House" road.  Follow the signs downhill to the campground.
