BLM Plans Prescribed Burn on South Cow Mountain

The Bureau of Land Management, in cooperation with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, plans to conduct a prescribed burn on South Cow Mountain, between Ukiah and Lakeport. on Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 15 and 16.

For public safety, the South Cow Mountain Off-Highway Vehicle Area will be closed during burning, and possibly for one day afterward.

BLM Natural Resource Specialist Jim Dawson said the burn is part of an ongoing project to find the best ways to reduce buildups of dead fuel with minimal impacts to air quality.

The burn will be conducted only if weather conditions allow for safe and successful burning. Adverse weather, such as wind and rain, will cancel.

More information on the burn or the closure status of the South Cow Mountain OHV Area is available from the BLM Ukiah Field Office, (707) 468-4000.
