News Release For Release: February 7, 2006 BLM Bishop Field Office to Implement Prescribed Burning at Fish Slough and Chalfant Valley As weather conditions permit throughout the remaining winter months, fire management personnel from the BLM Bishop Field Office and the Inyo National Forest will be conducting prescribed fire operations at Fish Slough and Chalfant Valley. Smoke may be visible at times from Highway 395 and Highway 6, as well as from the communities of Bishop, Chalfant Valley, and Hammil Valley. The purpose of the prescribed burning at Fish Slough is to improve conditions for re-establishment of native plants following past hydrologic restoration work, and to improve access for future restoration work. Approximately 35 acres will be burned at Fish Slough. At Chalfant Valley, several piles of previously treated non-native tamarisk will be burned at a location approximately 1 mile northeast of White Mountain Estates. The burning of this long-dead vegetation will facilitate the re-establishment of native plant species. Less than 1 acre will be burned at this location.
