Major Findings from the NAEP 1997 Arts Report CardThe NAEP 1997 Arts Report Card presents a great deal of useful information about what students know and can do in music, theatre, visual arts, what sorts of arts teaching is happening in our nation's schools, and the availability of school resources for the arts. NAEP gathers data about student achievement from assessment exercises and information about the education of students and school resources from the background questionnaires. For example, take a look at a data table featuring information about how often eighth-graders receive instruction in dance, music, theatre, and visual arts gathered from school questionnaires. Notice that while most students have some exposure to music and visual arts, few students receive in-school instruction in dance or theatre.
