"Coordination Strategies
Handbook:
A Guide for WIC and Primary Care Professionals"
The development of this handbook was funded through a grant
from the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), U. S. Department of
Agriculture, for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women,
Infants, and Children (WIC). This project was one of a number of
activities undertaken in response to the 1994 legislative mandate for
enhanced coordination between the WIC Program and health services. The
legislation, the Healthy Meals for Healthy Americans Act (Public Law
103-448), stipulated that the Secretaries of Agriculture and Health and
Human Services jointly establish and carry out initiatives to provide WIC
services at substantially more Community and Migrant Health Centers (C/MHCS)
and improve coordination of WIC services with Indian Health Service (IHS)
facilities.
The first section of the Handbook is composed of summaries of 12
"model coordination sites." Later sections of the handbook
highlight innovative coordination strategies, such as policy and
administrative coordination, clinical coordination and community-based
initiatives. Examples from real-life sites that have effectively
implemented these strategies are included. The handbook is intended to
serve as a reference tool for local agencies, as well as a source of
inspiration, in pursuing coordination and collocation efforts. This
handbook was distributed to WIC state and local agencies, C/MHC's, IHS
clinics, and others, in the autumn of 2000.
