The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is the largest federal provider of outdoor recreation in the nation, surpassing both the National Park Service and the US Forest Service. The Fort Worth District alone manages 25 lakes with 327 recreation areas which supported 23.3 million recreation visits in 2004. Our lakes are a canvas of boating, camping, swimming, fishing, hiking, and other leisure pursuits. Studies conducted in other parts of the country suggest that general recreation opportunities have a value to the recreating public in the range of $5 to $20; values for specialized recreation activities are estimated in the $30 to $75 range on a per-visit basis. Lake recreation is also a significant economic force, greatly buoying state tourism and local economies. Direct expenditures associated with recreation at Corps of Engineers’ lakes in Texas is estimated at more than $ 475,000,000, which further generates an additional $300,000,000 in local economic activity.
