[DOE LETTERHEAD]
National Nuclear
Security Administration
June 13, 2005
The Honorable A.
J. Eggenberger
Acting Chairman
Defense Nuclear Facilities
Safety Board
625 Indiana Avenue, N.W.
Suite 700
Washington, D.C. 20004-2901
Dear Dr. Eggenberger:
This is in response to your
October 8, 2004, letter. Enclosed is a
memorandum from the Sandia Site Office (SSO) that forwards a report (Official
Use Only) on the Corrective Action Plan for the April
19, 2004, skin
contamination
incident at Sandia National Laboratories (SNL-NM) Technical Area V. The SSO memorandum provides a summary of key
activities that are being implemented to address the Board concerns. Some of the near term and longer term actions
discussed in the report already are scheduled for completion.
You also requested a briefing on
“the schedule and actions that will be taken to ensure that Integrated Safety
Management
(ISM) is fully implemented at SNL-NM.” The
Corrective Action Plan addresses ISM improvements specific to Technical Area V
nuclear facilities.
In April 2005, SSO completed its review
of planned laboratory-wide ISM process improvements. During the Board’s visit of June 7, 2005 to SNL,
both SSO and
SNL provided briefings on the status of these corrective actions and the status of ISM. Based on the meeting it is SSO’s understanding that the Board and
its staff will continue
to monitor the progress in completing the corrective actions. If you have any questions please contact me or have your staff contact Mike Thompson at 301-903-5648.
Sincerely,
Linton F. Brooks
Administrator
